For the past 10 years, there have been a lot of smartphone applications popping up. Recently the mobile application analysis company, App Annie, released a list of the most downloaded apps and games in the last decade or 10 years (between the year 2010 and 2019). There are four categories released by App Annie, i.e the most downloaded application, the application with the longest duration of use, the most downloaded games, and the longest played games. For the most downloaded application categories, applications made by Facebook Inc. are the most dominating. Even the top four of the 10 most popular applications over the past decade are owned by Facebook Inc.
First in the list is Facebook’s social media, then second is Facebook Messenger, third is WhatsApp, and fourth is Instagram. Some observers even say WhatsApp and Instagram are the two best acquisitions made by Facebook. App Annie also released a list of applications that are most commonly used by smartphone users. Most of the applications included in the list are video and music streaming services. There are at least four video streaming applications, Netflix sits in the first place, Tencent Video in fourth place, YouTube in eighth place and HBO NOW in ninth place. Then for music streaming services, there is Pandora Music which is ranked second and Spotify which is ranked seventh. According to App Annie, video and music streaming applications over the past decade did dominate as the application most frequently used by consumers. While for the game category, there is no PUBG Mobile, Free Fire, Call of Duty Mobile, or Mobile Legends on this list. Game with simple gameplay such as Subway Surfers is in the top position as the most downloaded in the last 10 years.
The game Clash of Clans made by Supercell has become the most frequently played mobile game in the past decade. This game is indeed quite addictive. Players are required to build a stronghold that can be attacked by enemies at any time. In addition, players can also attack other players’ castles with a number of different characters and weapons. According to Annie’s Market Insight App Director, Amir Ghodrati, for this decade social media and entertainment applications have become the best-selling.
